The People vs. Columbus et al.
Directions: A monstrous crime was committed in the years after 1492, when perhaps as many as three million or more Tainos on the island of Hispaniola lost their lives. Who - and/or what - was responsible for this genocide? This is the question you will confront here. There are five suspects on trial. Each have been charged with the mistreatment and murder of Taino Indians. Each suspect's indictment (formal charges/accusations of a serious crime) is linked to their picture below. Students will be divided into five groups and assigned the task of defending one of these defendants. Review each of the indictments, and record evidence that strengthens your case in a graphic organizer like the one shown here.
